Irresistible no-bake candy clusters made with salted cashews, Golden Graham cereal (or graham crackers) and white chocolate chips.
Author: Mandy Rivers | Published: 10/9/26Everything about this recipe made me want to try it! Salty cashews (which have their own distinct flavor that I loooove) paired with the malty, crunchy graham cracker cereal all covered with white chocolate?? Sign me up for that!
I can't wait to tell you about this treat but either my menopause brain has kicked into a new gear or I'm losing it because I'm doubting how I came to know about it!
I thought I read about them in a British travel blog (in my imagination the woman traveled to Canada and tasted them) but now I can't find the source. Then a FB follower said she told me about them. And somewhere in my mind I feel like I may have seen them on Pinterest??
I may not be able to tell you how I originally learned about this easy confection but I can tell you what I know about them!
Clodhoppers were clusters of cashews and crushed graham crackers coated in white chocolate created in Winnipeg, Canada in the 1990's created by Edith Baker and sold by Kraves Candy Company. Kraves sold to Hershey's who discontinued the confection in 2012.
Fans have a cult-like following and there's even a petition on Change{dot}Org to bring them back! In the meantime, they're easy to make so folks just make their own!
There are myriad recipes online and most use traditional graham crackers crushed into chunky pieces. I'd seen a few that used the Golden Graham cereal (and thought I'd probably like that version more) but I tried it both ways.
I can confirm that I do, indeed, like the crunch from the cereal better. Half of the graham crackers turn to dust when they're crushed which makes the warm mixture sort of "mealy" but I like the taste just fine!
Some recipes add a little cinnamon but I didn't try it that way. If you think you'd like that, go for it! The recipes I saw added 1/2 teaspoon to the chocolate after it's melted.
NOTES ON CLODHOPPERS INGREDIENTS
WHITE CHOCOLATE CHIPS - I don't know why we're still calling them that because all of the manufacturers now call them "white chips" or "white candy morsels" but you know what I'm talking about.
CASHEWS - Definitely use salted cashews. We need some salt to balance all the sweet! Buy the cashew "pieces" or roughly chop whole ones.
GOLDEN GRAHAMS CEREAL - My recipe uses the cereal but the original recipe was for graham cracker pieces so use whichever you think you'll like best (same measurements).
7 FAQ ON CLODHOPPERS CANDY
1. Can I use almond bark instead? Yes! Just double the cashews and Golden Grahams if using the 1-lb package.
2. What nuts can I substitute for the cashews? Technically, any, but cashews are traditional to original Clodhoppers.
3. If I use graham crackers, should I use honey or cinnamon flavor? Since some recipes add cinnamon, I think cinnamon graham crackers might be original to the recipe but use what you like best!
4. Should I put these in the fridge? You can refrigerate them to speed things along when waiting for the white chocolate to firm up but they should be stored at room temperature.
5. Can these be frozen? Yes! Once they have completely cooled and been broken into clusters, store in an air-tight container or tip-top bag in the freezer up to 3 months.
6. Is this the same as White Chocolate Trash? No, but there are similarities! WCT is made with dry-roasted peanuts, corn Chex cereal and M&Ms.
7. Can I make this with milk or dark chocolate chips? Of course, but then they won't be the original Clodhoppers (though Kraves did release a variety of flavors that included milk chocolate).

- 1 12-oz bag white chocolate chips

Notes
