GET OUTSIDE AND PLAY!

The night we had a full-on game of hide-and-seek with the kids and had more fun than they did!

I have to tell y’all this because I laughed so much I nearly wet my pants (oh, who am I kidding, I’m in my forties and had a few babies… there was nothing nearly about it). We spend a good bit of time with two families. Our kids are all similar in age (youngest being 8, the oldest being two hellcat 15-yr old twin boys), most of our kids have played softball or baseball together at some point, we have similar parenting styles, we enjoy the same things, etc.

As we are prone to do this time of year, we ended up at one family’s house a few Saturday nights ago. We built a fire out back, cranked up some tunes, everybody brought food (I had a macaroni and cheese EPIPHANY that I’ll be telling you about soon!), and we caught up over a few beers while the kids played.

We adults were sitting there by the fire and one of the chillins came whizzing by all out of breath and said, “Hey! Will y’all play hide-and-seek with us?!” And… none of us said no. We all started looking around at each other and the next thing I knew a FULL-BLOWN game was underway.

Making up the group of adults were coaches, Marines and former athletes so this was no mamby-pamby humor-the kids event. There were two teams, serious strategizing and fight-to-the-death levels of competitiveness. Seriously, I’m pretty sure my friend broke a rib when she completely laid out to dive for her husband’s leg to keep him from getting to home base and Husband still isn’t walking right after he and his buddy got tangled up in a bench while running at FULL SPEED in the dark.

The very best part about it? The kids’ reaction to us playing with them. They COULD NOT believe it was happening! It was like Christmas morning! Seriously, the look on their faces when we said OK was priceless. I haven’t seen that much joy wrapped around 10 kids in my entire life.

And I got to thinking? How long has it been since any of us adults truly played? Since we just gave into our inner-child and squealed and ran and laughed and hid in the bushes and up trees and just played?

So, the moral of the story is, if you want to have more fun than you’ve had in decades (but possibly walk away with some injuries) while simultaneously making what is sure to be one of your kids’ best childhood memories EVER, the next time a kid asks you if you want to play hide-and-seek, go for it!

CAN I PLEASE HAVE SOME?

Recipes (not my own) I came across this week that REALLY caught my eye.

Easy Lava Cakes by Sally’s Baking Addiction

Easy Lava Cakes by Sally’s Baking Addiction
We took the kids on a cruise a few years ago and Brutus discovered Molten Lava Cakes! Our waiter would let him have as many as he wanted IF he stood up and sang, Can I get a HOT molten LAVA caaaaaaake? Which he did without missing a beat. I can’t wait to make these for him! And of course, make him sing!

Peel n’ Eat Shrimp from Once Upon a Chef

Peel n’ Eat Shrimp from Once Upon a Chef
Old Bay, beer, shrimp and spicy cocktail sauce? OH YEAH, count me in! The picture of the Old Bay can is what caught my eye (remember, Mama’s from Maryland) and when I clicked over to the recipe, I liked everything about it! I always steam my shrimp but I think I’m going to try this!

Homemade Biscuits by Buns in my Oven

Homemade Biscuits by Buns in my Oven
Can we just take a minute here to appreciate how perfect this biscuit looks? I’ve never seen a biscuit recipe quite like this but I ain’t arguing with this picture. My mouth is literally watering. I want to slide a piece of country ham in there with a smear of mustard. With a piping hot cup of coffee too?Man, DANG!

    1. Well, if you and a few thousand of your friends would like to pay me to run this site, I could remove the ads. Until then, I need them to keep the lights on.

Hi there! While I’m not able to respond to every comment, I try hard to answer any questions that haven’t been addressed in the post, recipe or in other comments.

I can tell you now 1) I have no idea if you can substitute Minute Rice or brown rice in my recipes because I’ve never used them and 2) If I know how to convert a recipe to a Crock Pot version, I will make a note about it (otherwise, I don’t know).

And though I may not respond to them all, I do read each and every comment and I LOVE to hear from you guys! Thanks, y’all! - Mandy
