Crock Pot Barbequed Ham Sandwiches

Shaved or chipped ham with a simple tangy barbecue sauce recipe cooked in the slow cooker served on buns perfect for entertaining, tailgating or game day!

Years and years ago I dated a guy whose family had a place on Lake Cayuga in upstate New York and would get together every 4th of July to have a week-long bash for the extended family. His mom, Patty, was tasked with feeding the masses all week and one of the things she always made was this barbequed ham (or something very similar too it – I've tweaked the recipe a tad).

It’s awesome because you can just throw it in the crock pot and everyone can make their own sandwiches whenever they get hungry.

Side story about these guys… my boyfriend always just referred to his family’s place at the lake as “the cottage” so when we made our first trip up there together, that’s what I was expecting – a cottage. I imagined a quaint little cedar-planked place with a few rooms, second generation furniture and prolly a whiff of mildew in the air.

What I found upon our arrival instead was a compound. There was the main house, the guest house and a bunk house down at the beach. That you took an elevator to get to. I've always felt very grateful to have gotten to spend a few vacations up there. Cottage or compound – these were good people who I enjoyed spending time with.

OK, back to the sammiches! You just throw all the ingredients in the crock pot, stir it up and go! This is perfect for vacations or family functions when you need something cheap and easy to feed a crowd!

Crock Pot Barbequed Ham Sandwiches

Shaved or chipped ham with a simple tangy barbecue sauce recipe cooked in the slow cooker served on buns perfect for entertaining, tailgating or game day!

ingredients:

  • 2.5 pounds shaved ham (see notes)
  • 1 12-oz. bottle chili sauce
  • 1/2 cup barbeque sauce
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons dry mustard
  • 16-18 hamburger buns

instructions:

How to cook Crock Pot Barbequed Ham Sandwiches

  1. Combine chili sauce, barbeque sauce, brown sugar and dry mustard in a medium-sized crock pot and mix well.
  2. Add ham then stir gently until combined. Heat until bubbly then reduce the crock pot setting to “warm” until ready to serve.
  3. Serve on hamburger buns.

NOTES:

You're going to get this from the deli. Ask for them to "shave" or "chip" the ham for you (and if they don't know what that means, tell them you want them to slice it so thin it falls apart). I typically get smoked ham or black forest.

  1. That looks amazing! I'm from western PA and bbq chip chop ham sandwiches are big there. Growing up, my mom only put the chili sauce in it but combining with the bbq sauce sounds delish. Dinner one night this week!!

  2. I also am from Western Pennsylvania and my Grandma made these sandwiches all the time when I was growing up. I loved them and now I make them when I need a quick supper. She made them with chipped (you guys call it shaved in the south) chopped ham in the deli and exactly like your only without the chili sauce. And I just read the comment above and see I am not the only PA person who has had these, lol :) Now that I live in SC when I make these "BBQ Sandwiches" native southerners look at me like I lost my mind. I like them though :)

  3. When we say "small whole ham" ... do you mean like a ham you'd serve for Easter? Because this looks really good, and I don't imagine shaving a spiral sliced ham looking like the picture. Help! :)

    1. I probably shouldn't say "whole ham" (might have to change that). What I mean is the little 2-3 pound boneless hams in the meat department that are really just deli hams that haven't been sliced yet.

    2. Good deal! Thanks for the clarification, because I was totally drooling over this picture. It looks like Arby's but, you know, not roast beef. ;)

I just found your website and I love it. I especially love the floral background. It makes me happy. I made your "Mama's Chocolate Pie" last weekend and it was fabulous. If that mean, old Hilly had been around she would have surely had 2 slices!

  8. How long does this stay in crock pot and is that on high or low before 'warm' setting?

  9. I almost purchased asian chili sauce
Until i saw the heinz chili sauce near the bbq and figured that was it. I bought the while boneless ham and the shaved it with no problem at the deli.i had never asked for that before so i didnt know how it would go down. I am also from western pa.pittsburgh. pittsburghers do isalys chipped chopped ham. But i think this recipe is a updgrade.

  10. Whats the best bbq to use ??

  11. I am also from Western PA and my mom made Ham BBQ (as we call it) all the time. I make it for picnics and parties also. However, one thing we do differently is that we use cooked ham and get it chipped/shaved. And we fry the ham first before putting it in the crock with the sauce. Frying takes out most of the water & grease from the ham. It's time consuming, but worth it!

Hi there! While I’m not able to respond to every comment, I try hard to answer any questions that haven’t been addressed in the post, recipe or in other comments.

I can tell you now 1) I have no idea if you can substitute Minute Rice or brown rice in my recipes because I’ve never used them and 2) If I know how to convert a recipe to a Crock Pot version, I will make a note about it (otherwise, I don’t know).

And though I may not respond to them all, I do read each and every comment and I LOVE to hear from you guys! Thanks, y’all! - Mandy
