Hey Y'all! - Top 10 Game Day Recipes for the Super Bowl!

HERE'S WHAT YOU'LL FIND IN THIS ISSUE OF HEY Y'ALL:

TOP 10 GAME DAY RECIPES FOR YOUR SUPER BOWL PARTY!
My favorite HEARTY appetizers to have when we're watching the big game!

WHAT A BUZZKILL
The thing I stumbled onto that I wish I hadn't.

And that's all I have today because I have had THE WORST WEEK EVER and have barely had time to brush my teeth but I wanted to arm you with some awesome recipes for Sunday! Also? Take a look at what I wish I hadn't seen... I'm curious to see what you think.

TOP 10 GAME DAY RECIPES FOR YOUR SUPER BOWL PARTY!

There are a gozillion appetizers out there that range anywhere from fru-fru to tofu but when I'm watching the Super Bowl, I want GRUB! I want hearty, meaty, messy snacks that stick to your ribs and go with cold beer! Here's what I plan on making Sunday (well, maybe not all 10 of them but at least 7 or 8!)

Top 10 Game Day Recipes for the Super Bowl!

WHAT A BUZZKILL

The thing I stumbled onto that I wish I hadn't.

OK, I’m one of those people who can find humor in almost everything. Inappropriate giggling and hysterical laughter are my default reactions to fear. Solid life skills, right?

So when someone shared this post with me from BuzzKill, I mean BuzzFeed, called “11 Bull{expletive} Things About Online Recipes” I set about reading it anticipating a few good laughs (some of which would likely be aimed at myself).

Let’s see what starts off the list in the #1 spot...

stupid hateful cartoon

OK, that's kinda funny! I get it. Some food blogs overdo it with the 40’leven ginormous pictures of every. single. step. of the recipe and it’s easy to lose interest.

I get it. Ta hee hee.

But when I scrolled down to the comment sections (Lord, why did I do that?) I wasn’t laughing anymore.

Here are just a tiny smidgen of the comments relating to the post’s #1 “bullpoop” thing about online recipes (both from the post and where I found it on Facebook):

{WARNING – bad language ahead}

Johnathon O:
#1 is my biggest pet peeve. You have a recipe blog; you're not entering a short-story contest. I don't need to know the name of your pet fish in 3rd grade. Just tell me how to make the damn spinach dip in the picture.

Becky B:
…I still HATE having to scroll through 18 paragraphs of garbage about how the kids have been so busy with soccer practice and your husband's bowels are acting up and the bathroom remodel is taking longer than expected... I'm just here to see a recipe.

Kenmakara S.
Yeah no they can STFU and just tell us the fucking recipe.

Kristin R:
I hate their personal back story that's 12 paragraphs long before you hit the recipe.

Elizabeth R:
Ikr.those peopple sound so narcissistic.we came for the recipe not for you!

Dee F:
or they show you the same dish about 10 times during their rant

Lynnette:
Yeah I love Pinterest but hate all the bullshit talking that the cooks do in paragraph after paragraph. I don't need your life history folks...just the damn recipe. Guess they are all wannabe writers.

Caitlin A:
Don't they know we just scroll past the nonsense? Why even bother.

Kayla Z.
I don't give a crap about how they took the dish to their sister's husband's uncle's co-worker's brother's party and it was a hit. I know NONE of these people, I DON'T CARE. Just put up the damn recipe already.

There are hundreds more. HUNDREDS.

Is this how y’all feel too? I mean, does what I do here make you angry? Do a few paragraphs of me telling you about the recipe (or how I caught the oven mitt on fire making it) make you angry like this?

I certainly don't mind if someone scrolls past the intro and heads straight for the recipe. I just had no idea scrolling a bit was so infuriating.

I guess I’m just shocked. I take SO MUCH JOY from interacting with y’all through the blog. I had no idea people hated the personal side of recipe blogs so much. Like, in all caps HATE.

Anyway, I guess this just kinda broke my heart a little. I’m going to keep doing what I do, how I do it [pumps chest with fist and whispers Ima do me, y’all… Ima do me…] but I am curious… Are we in a bubble here or… do you agree with these comments?

MY BAD WEEK

Just in case you're having a stinky time right now, you ain't alone, sista. You ain't alone.

OK, real quick, let me just give you a snapshot of the last week (so maybe you'll forgive me for this abbreviated issue of Hey Y'all!)

THURSDAY
Got the title in the mail for Husband's truck. WHOOP! WHOOP! No more car payment and now we can finally get new windows and that new roof!

FRIDAY
The motor died in the truck. Over 6K to fix everything that was wrong.

SUNDAY
Had to sell truck and go buy new car.

MONDAY
Spent all day dealing with administrative crap from selling the truck to an individual and then buying a car (a trip to the DMV is always fun!)

TUESDAY
Sometime during the night someone broke into the new car and tried to steal it.

WEDNESDAY
Spent the whole day dealing with the police, insurance and fixing the damage. And to top it off, found out my Angel Baby didn't make the JV softball team. She was crushed so that just about did me in after everything else that had happened.

Don't worry about me, y'all! I know I seem super negative today but I'm not! I promise. I finally cracked my nut Wednesday night (seeing my baby hurt did me in) and locked myself in the bathroom so I could ugly-cry for a few minutes and got it all out! I'm ready to spend the weekend with my family and watch some football!! GO EAGLES!!!

  1. I LOVE hearing the personal stuff! Who wants to try a recipe from a complete stranger? I live thousands of miles from you, but feel I know you a little bit.
Sorry about the lousy week! Things can only get better!

  2. Well, I love your commentaries. Not that I really read all the others!!

    ReplyDelete
  3. I like the personal touches! You and Chef John (foodwishes) are the only blogs I follow, I have a couple youtube only subs but I wouldn't follow if I didn't want to "hear" what you have to say!

    ReplyDelete
  4. For those who get angry about the personal stuff - maybe they could should go buy a cookbook with just the recipes!

    ReplyDelete
  5. I, too, like the personal stuff! Makes it much more interesting.

  6. I love the peek into your personal life because you are very funny and entertaining! On the blogs that I don't care about or don't have time to read, I just scroll down to the recipe. No. Big. Deal. A lot of people anymore, are just looking for something to be angry about or offended. Keep doin' YOU because we LOVE YOU!

    ReplyDelete
  7. I love your stories!! keep doing what your doing, exactly the way you have been doing it!!

  8. I like your blog! I'm really sorry you had a bad week though!!!

  9. Those people aren't "us." Ignore them and their inability to scroll efficiently. They'd be the first to complain if there were only recipes. It's what they live for. Be grateful you don't have to live in their "skin!"

  10. I never comment on the blogs I read...mostly because I assume the author is likely too busy to read the comment section. However, in case you read this one I LOVE YOUR BLOG the recipes and your sense of humor! Please keep being you and know that you bring a smile to the face of a Farm Wife in South Dakota!

  16. The personal stuff is by far my favorite part (and I'm young and hip). You make me laugh and getting to know about your family lets me know that y'all are similar to us (and that y'all eat like us) because of that, I know that whatever recipe you post will be something the people at my house will eat! Without that, I wouldn't have given your blog a second look! You keep doing you and I'll keep laughing and cooking!

  17. Mandy, keep on doing your thing! I love your blog and the personal spin you put on it. My family enjoys your recipes & I kinda feel like we are neighbors since I've been reading your stuff for so long. Don't let the complainers get you down. You are awesome!

  20. Love your stories and wit. Very unassuming and genuine, real life! So sorry you had any awful week. Its almost over! Seriously, for those folks who don't want to read all the other stuff...DON'T!!! Really, first-world problems. They should be happy that that's the worst thing in life they experience and have to rant about it! Jeez... no one is making them. Thank you for being you! Betty in Virginia

  21. The internet sure has brought out the worst in people. The jerks can buy a cookbook. Sorry you had a bad week, sounds horrid!

What you talk about is the main reason I read your blog - ok and the pictures! Only read the positive comments. We are only telling the truth! You're a hoot! Don't go changing, it's not the "Southern" way

  24. I love this blog, I come here to see the recipes and to laugh; I happen to think you're hilarious!...I'm sorry you had a tough week...It kills me when the kids don't make the team (I wanna shake the coach and ask "What were you thinking?!!!)...Hope you enjoy the weekend - Go Eagles!...

  25. I'm sorry I enjoy hearing about your lives and the back stories, thats why I subscribed to your blog. Some days I dont have time, not in the mood and I just scroll on by. For the life of my I do not understand why people feel the need to say every mean and hurtful thing that pops into their heads. We all have those feeling and those thoughts sometimes, doesn't mean they need to be said/typed out loud for everyone to hear/read. I could go on, I'll get off my soap box though. Please don't anyone who blogs recipes quit telling your stories! My most favorite recipes have precious memories attached to them and isn't that what makes life worth living, is creating the memories of and with your loved ones so that when your gone, your children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews etc will remember you and tell those stories. Keep on keepin on girl!!! Hugs

  28. I love your stories! Keep being you! The internet seems to bring out the worst in a lot of people…they seem to think that just because they aren’t speaking face to face that they can be as hateful as they want. Ignore them and keep writing for yourself & those of us that LOVE YOU (apparently many :) ) XOXOXO

  29. Haters gonna hate. Don't let them get you down. I think you have a good balance of food and personal stuff. And you have such great recipes, too. (Except I always have to negotiate the fact that my husband likes food less spicy than I do.)

    ReplyDelete
  30. I love reading your blog and look forward to it every time I get a new email. Your stories help me to see that I'm not the only one who has ups and downs. If having to scroll through a blog to get to the recipe is the only thing these people have to complain about they must have a pretty good life. Haters gonna
hate just keeping doing what you do and ignore the complainers. Hope your weekend is better!! Go Eagles :)

  31. I love your blog!! Keep up the good work!!! Goodness my week was normal compared to yours...good luck!

  32. I'm sorry you had such an awful week. If bad things truly do come in threes (and I think they do), you should be in the clear. *knocks wood*

As for the comments on the Buzzkill piece, it depends on the blogger's writing style and their level of narcissism (lol). I love your posts because you crack me up, so I always read them. Some other bloggers, I just scroll on past their life history and go straight to the recipe. I'd never consider having a hissy fit at anyone over what they choose to post on their own blog, though. How utterly ridiculous. Keep doing you and pfffffft to the cranypantses.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Errr... That shoulda been crankypantses. :)

  33. You have to keep in mind the audience of BuzzFeed and that should tell you everything you need to know! Most folks who go to blogs understand the difference between a blog and a recipe site. Obviously that audience doesn't. They are classic users. They just want the recipe. And to be ugly. Because they don't care about anybody but themselves. Bless their hearts.

    1. Amen. Your blog is another of my favorites.

    2. Mary, I love your comment! I have southern roots, and the gentle, kind "bless their hearts" remark made me laugh - for real.

  34. Don't ever stop being who you are, we love you! You make me laugh :)

  35. I normally don’t comment on blogs either, but it was picking up a cookbook in a store and thumbing thru it that started my cooking blog interest. Christy Jordan from Southernplate.com. I loved that she had a story with every recipe, I bought it on the spot, and came home and read the whole book the same night. I believe I found yours, thru her. I love the stories. It makes you seem more real to me. Keep doing what makes you happy. If they don’t like it, they don’t have to read it.

  36. "Comparison is the thief of joy" ....apparently these trolls were raised in the drive thru and do not have joyous fond memories of loved ones and the food they prepared for family dinners and holidays. I can't open up a can of Chicken Noodle without thinking of my Great Grandma adding milk to the broth, because it made the soup taste better":) My most favorite story to date was the "busted bra and leggings saga" because I and so many others can relate personally. Secondly, things happen in threes, you are DONE for the month! I know you and your husband 20 years from now will retell this story to your grown children and be able to relate to "when life gets hard" talks. Keep being you, telling your stories, and passing on food recipes we all can create with our families and make memories around the table.

    ReplyDelete
  37. You just keep doing what you do. You may have gotten a few bad responses from a few people who are obviously struggling with self-value, but you have many hundreds times that of us cookin' folk who sound just like that when we are in the kitchen. That is me and my granddaughter to a tee when we are cooking and I tell her all my stories. She doesn't mind and neither do I. Thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I love your blog.....any blog that gives a personal touch to their readers is a star! Negative, hateful, nasty people should go jump a stump! They are not wanted. Keep on doing the same good job you do.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I am another one who doesn't usually comment on blogs, but I subscribed to your blog because I enjoy it. I like reading your stories, and your recipes rock, so Thank You!!! Keep up the good work!!!

  40. Your blog is included in my top 5 sites that I visit EVERY DAY to see if there is anything new - 1 knitting blog, 1 author blog, your blog, 1 outfit blog and 1 other food blog. I am middle-aged and heading for a broken hip, but I don't think that's why I like your blog and most all of your recipes. I also follow you on Pinterest, which helps me keep my favorite recipes organized better for easy retrieval. Please keep being you and sharing all the good and the bad (can't have anything nice without somebody trying to steal it!) with your blog family.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Don't let hateful people get u down. Betcha if they saw you in person they wouldn't have said those nasty thing. I love your stories, and if I'm in a rush I scroll past and make the recipe. I love your recipes and would love if you keep doing you! Much love🤗

  42. Hi there , I also like to hear about you and it makes me laugh when you have the same issues like us and makes us connect not just looking at recipes alone

do not listen to the ones that have no feelings or heart they are cold people

keep on doing what you do and make us laugh and the recipes go Girl

  43. There are just as many, if not more, who don't mind hearing about it. Love the stories, but sorry you had such a bad week. Your truck story kinds of scares me as I just paid off my car and will be awaiting for the title. Maybe I will take my car in and make sure it is in top condition before the title makes it to me. Hope you have a better week.

  44. For Pete's sake! Some people just want to be angry and be ugly to generous hearted people who blog and share parts of their lives and great recipes. I don't understand the anger, but I AM happy to get a peek into someone else's life and discover how we all struggle in the effort to love and provide for our families. Thank you for all your work involved in sharing!

  45. DON'T WORRY, WE LOVE YOUR BLOG. AND I HOPE NEXT WEEK IS MUCH BETTER...

    ReplyDelete
  46. Unfortunately there are haters everywhere! Just keep doing what your doing, we (your followers) wouldn't be here if we didn't love you! Don't let the whiners of the world ruin your day! Cheers! :)

  47. Ive only made a few of your recipes, only because we are a house with food restrictions... But I have read almost ALL your stories!

I enjoy the recipes, but honestly i come here to laugh :)

    ReplyDelete
  48. Hey - I signed up for updates from your blog because I wanted to. I like the recipes; but if I didn't want to hear the side stories; I know where the unsubscribe button is. Don't worry about "those" people. Worry about you and yours and keep it real. The rest doesn't matter.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I am new to your site, but love the looks of your recipes and they are simple! Don't change, please.
Honestly, I had to giggle at your week--if you didn't have bad luck you wouldn't have any!

    ReplyDelete
  50. I don't remember how I stumbled onto your blog less than a year ago, but I love your writing style...your sense of humor comes across so well (and HILARIOUSLY)! And your recipes are truly awesome! I enjoy reading your stories and getting a good laugh before I get to your recipes...some of which I've made numerous times and shared with friends and family! So thanks for writing this recipe blog and please continue to do so!

  51. I know I'm only one voice; however, I love reading your stories, almost as much as I love your recipes. I have followed your hysterical, informative, and tasteful (on multiple levels), blog for years and refer many folks your way because you know your way around a kitchen. In fact, the only time I get miffed with you is when you are on a posting hiatus (which I know, from being a long time follower, is related to your commitment to your family and the busy schedule y'all keep. Please keep sharing your stories, and especially in this new format. I hope you have a better week. We are having a super night because I made your Hamburger Steak recipe for dinner :)!!

    ReplyDelete
  52. How rude. They can just buy a freaking cookbook if they only want recipes. You're great, and I wish you were my neighbor. Just let the nasty comments roll right off, and know you have plenty of folks here for your recipes AND your story.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Like so many I never comment, as usually I don't feel as if I have something relevant enough to put our there in print. Not today. From one Southern girl to another I love your blog. You are real. Thank you so much for sharing a corner of your life with us. You keep me real! Please don't change a thing.

    ReplyDelete
  54. YOU GUYS!!! I swear I wasn't fishing for compliments when I shared this with y'all but man, DANG, you sure know how to make a gal feel good. Seriously. The next time I have a week last that last one, I'm coming back here to read all of your comments. I LOVE Y'ALL for being on this journey with me and for being so awesome and supportive. None of this would be worth doing if you weren't here with me :o)

    ReplyDelete
  55. Don't listen to the haters! If they're that annoyed they can go to different sites. I enjoy the stories and sharing of your life experiences, keep on!

    ReplyDelete
  56. Love your blog...recipes AND the stories! Don't change a thing!

    ReplyDelete
  57. I'm late to this posting but I have to tell you...DON'T CHANGE A THING! Some writers are better than others and you are one of those that are just good. Some other sites are good too with their writing like Southern Plate. Some sites the recipes are great but the writing not so much. However I don't think that is an excuse for people to be rude.

Please don't let a bad week and naysayers keep you down.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I love your stories! I'm from the Midwest so life in the south is something I know nothing about. When I read your posts, I read them with a southern accent in my head. Same thing with a blogger I follow who writes about Mexican cookery, and a hobby blogger I follow whose from Australia. I love feeling connected to and learning about other walks of life through the blogs I read. Don't ever stop. If those naysayers don't want personal stories, they should just to go the Food Network or Allrecipes. Plenty of us love getting to "know" people online through their writing!

Hi there! While I’m not able to respond to every comment, I try hard to answer any questions that haven’t been addressed in the post, recipe or in other comments.

I can tell you now 1) I have no idea if you can substitute Minute Rice or brown rice in my recipes because I’ve never used them and 2) If I know how to convert a recipe to a Crock Pot version, I will make a note about it (otherwise, I don’t know).

And though I may not respond to them all, I do read each and every comment and I LOVE to hear from you guys! Thanks, y’all! - Mandy
