Hey Y'all! - 10 Recipes You NEED to Make this Fall

Welp, as you can see, I’ve decided to start a newsletter! Any food blogger worth her salt would have done this eons ago but, as you well know, I don’t always follow the herd 😉

But I got to thinking… sometimes I just want to share something with you that wouldn’t be something I’d put on the blog or share on the Facebook page and THIS would be a perfect way to do that!

And, if I haven’t told you in a while, let me just say THANK YOU again for following along with me over the years. I’ve realized something about myself – bear with me, you’re a part of this – it’s not just food that I love, it’s feeding people. Nothing warms my heart more than giving someone something good to eat and seeing them enjoy it. And that’s what you do for me. You let me share my recipes with you which is just the same. So, friend, I thank you.

I'm not 100% sure yet what sort of format things will fall into and I expect I will change things up as I go until we find something that works. For now, I'm just going to share with you what might be going on in my life, recipes you won't want to miss and well, whatever else comes to mind!

HERE'S WHAT YOU'LL FIND IN THIS ISSUE OF HEY Y'ALL:

YOU CAN'T MAKE THIS STUFF UP

Things that made me ugly-laugh or otherwise occupied my attention, mind or heart this week.
  • I dropped my phone in the toilet. Did you know, that when confronted with the thought of spending a bazillion dollars and selling your soul to the devil signing another contract with Verizon, you will throw yourself on the floor of a bathroom stall and plunge your entire arm into a public toilet without any hesitation whatsoever? Like, with ninja quickness?
  • Have you discovered Heather Land yet? Through the powers of everything that makes the internet awesome, this woman has created a collection of hilarious snapchat-filtered videos discussing things that get in her craw. View the collection here or take a quick peek below. You'll be glad you did!

    • I paid $9 for a lukewarm piece of Italian sausage and a cold, stiff bun at the state fair last week. I still ain't got over it.
    • This picture from five years ago of AB and Brutus coveting a brownie I was staging for photos popped up in my timeline and it totally made my day.

    • Food Network came up with a “hack” for making peanut butter sandwiches and the internet responded in THE MOST hilarious way. Click here to see the responses 😂
    • This little booger in the video below has to be one of the sweetest creatures on earth.

    STEP ON A CRACK...

Or as I hashtagged all summer long #BrokeBackMandy

You may have noticed I went several months without posting any new recipes (or really genuinely interacting on the Facebook page). That was because I had back surgery. Like, major back surgery. I’m all better now (well, I’m getting there) so I’m back in the kitchen!

Now that I’ve had the surgery and alleviated much of the pain, I can look back over the last 12-14 months and see how living in constant, chronic pain was affecting my life. The truth is, I didn’t want to cook. I didn’t want to talk. I didn’t want to laugh. I didn’t feel creative. I didn’t feel anything but pain and frustration and exhaustion and now I can see what a toll it was taking on my life and my family.

SO – hold on a sec, let me climb up on this soap box – here’s my message to you: TAKE CARE OF YOUR BODY. There’s never enough time, there’s never enough money, there’s always a reason to put it off but we must take care of ourselves. You are the only you there is and there are people who love you, who need you, who want you around for a long, long time so YOU have to take care of YOU.

    CAN I PLEASE HAVE SOME?

Recipes (not my own) I came across this week that REALLY caught my eye.

AGATE CAKE from Sugar Hero - Though I would never have the patience to construct such a work of art, I think this cake – specifically the candy agate slices – is about the coolest thing I’ve seen on the internet lately! Scroll down to the video to see how she makes the agate slices. I think it would be cool to leave the centers hollow so they'd look like geodes! View Recipe

ULTRA-SMASHED CHEESEBURGERS from Serious Eats - Two things I want to tell you here… One, Serious Eats and, specifically, their contributor/chef/culinary genius, Kenji Lopez-Alt are my go-to resources for mastering various cooking techniques. Two, I have recently fallen in LOVE with this style burger! We just got a Freddy’s Steakburger down the road and this is how they prepare their burgers and they are ta die for! View Recipe

CHOCOLATE ORANGE COOKIES from Butter with a Side of Bread – You know, like the candy? First, I LOVE those chocolate orange slice candies (they remind me of my childhood and Christmas) but second, what a COOL technique for shaping the cookies! Between the sugar coating and the chocolate dip, these have got to be amazing. View Recipe

    WE EAT FISH STICKS TOO

My weeknight meal plan for feeding my busy family. Because we all need ideas.
And yes, we eat fish sticks too. 🐟

    MONDAY
    Hot Ham & Cheese Sandwiches
    Veggies with Ranch
Hot Ham & Cheese Sandwiches - Add a little oil in a large skillet then heat over medium-high heat. Arrange little bundles of thinly sliced deli ham in the pan then cook until heated through, a tad crispy and any water evaporates, flipping once. Place a slice of American cheese over each bundle and continue cooking until cheese is melted. Serve on hot, buttered buns.

    TUESDAY
    Bolognese Sauce with Ditalini Pasta
    Tossed Salad
I freeze containers of this Bolognese Sauce 👉
to use for quick weeknight suppers. I LOVE it with ditalini, which is the super short pieces of tube pasta.

    WEDNESDAY
    S.O.S. over Toast
    Fried Potatoes

    THURSDAY
    Big Fat Salad
I make a big individual salad on everyone’s plate (usually romaine, cucumbers, boiled eggs, cheddar cheese, craisins, sunflower seeds) then top with diced Naked Chicken Tenders

    FRIDAY
    Pizza Night
Time to burn up that Dominos gift card, baby!

Thanks for catching up with me this week! Don't forget to like, share and pin the stuff you enjoy from South Your Mouth - it's what keeps the wheels a' turning!

    Post a Comment

Hi there! While I’m not able to respond to every comment, I try hard to answer any questions that haven’t been addressed in the post, recipe or in other comments.

I can tell you now 1) I have no idea if you can substitute Minute Rice or brown rice in my recipes because I’ve never used them and 2) If I know how to convert a recipe to a Crock Pot version, I will make a note about it (otherwise, I don’t know).

And though I may not respond to them all, I do read each and every comment and I LOVE to hear from you guys! Thanks, y’all! - Mandy
