The Onions and Cast of Characters

I talk about my onions and make odd personal references a lot. I'm sure most of you are like what the crap is she talking about?

These are the onions...

As we get to know each other, little snippets of my life will make their way into the mix of recipes and food posts.

Some folks have aliases (like my kids) and some people have real nicknames that will make you scratch your head.

Here’s a glossary of the Cast of Characters in my life:

Husband: This one’s pretty obvious. Husband is Canadian and how he has managed my Southern behind all these years is baffling. If there’s one person whose sense of humor is more warped than mine, it’s Husband.

The Onions: My kids.

Brutus: My youngest child and only son. He’s currently 7 years old.

Angel Baby: My baby girl. She’s currently 8 years old.

Flossy: My big girl. Flossy came with Husband which was one of the best things he’s ever done for me. She’s currently 12 years old.

Ginga: My dad. This is the actual name my kids have given him. My whole life I heard my dad say, “When I become a grandparent I’m going to be called Granddad…. not PeePaw or PooPoo, or any bullsh!t like that. I want to be called Grand-Dad." Yeah, how’d that work out for you, Ginga?

Nana: Another obvious one. This is my mother and also referred to as She Who Must Be Obeyed. Nana’s a total badass and I want to be her when I grow up. She taught me how to cook, to laugh at myself and how to be a confident, empowered woman.

Mil: My mother-in-law. Who is amazeballs and nothing like the stereotypical mother-in-law. Mil and most of Husband’s family still live in Ontario, Canada. Also, I think she might be an angel. Like, a real one with retractable wings.

Ninja Barb [a.k.a. ‘My Ninja’]: Ninja Barb is my 70-something year old neighbor who fusses over us like a mother hen. I call her my Ninja because she could outrun any one of us in a footrace, she can find anything, she can fix anything and I’m pretty sure she’d be the first person I called if aliens invaded. And she does awesome stuff like leave bowls of fresh cut magnolia blossoms on my kitchen counter.

  2. Not sure how I ran across your page today but I'm so glad I did. Seems to me we think alot alike. I have a couple friends that I call HOOKER and as much as I LOVE my kids (all 6 of them) I call them my MOSQUITOS because they tend to suck the life out of me from time to time!

  3. My mother was always insistent that she would be called "grandma". Along comes my son who had a hard time with g's and r's as a toddler. So, it was "Wam-ma", which eventually morphed into "wammy"....until the day she died. And she loved every moment of it!

  7. I just found you accidentally while clicking on some random recipe post (probably from the country cook - i'll have to go back and look because i'm TOTALLY distracted now and whatever it was looked really, really - i mean REALLY - good). Where have you been all my life? Clearly you and I are long lost twins, separated at birth. (either that or i have suddenly turned into a blogger stalker, and that CAN'T be. I am a refined, sophisticated woman of character. yeah.right.). You talk like me. You cook like me. You have names for everyone ... yep - like me! Hell, ya even kinda look like me! Anyway - glad I found you... pardon me while I lurk over here in the shadows, admiring the wonderfulness of you :) Keep up the good work so I can continue my admiration!

  14. I came across your page through a friend on Facebook. I am SO glad I did. First off, your recipes look AMAZING, but my goodness, it's nice to find a real person out there. LOL, your stuff had me literally laughing out loud last night, (when I should have been snuggled nice in my bed). My daughter thought your "amazeballs" was one of the funniest things she has ever heard! So thanks for that laugh from her!!! I can't wait to try some of this stuff out.

Hello fellow southerner and hooker. I call a lot of my friends "hooker" as well, it just flows nicely for whatever reason. Anyhoo, I stumbled upon your blog via a Pinterest pin one of my friends had posted and just had to look you up. You are amazing!! So many of the recipes you have on here are very similar to mine and I've enjoyed browsing. I am looking forward to trying out some of them. I too love to cook but not so much the chore of cleaning up. I love bacon and feel that bacon grease should be a staple in the household. I also have nicknames for just about everone I know. It's just fun that way. You have a fan in me and I'll be following you closely!! :)

You make me smile. My sister Cheryl always called me "huzzy", she emigrated to Texas in her 20's :). We lost her to cancer last year and when I read your blog for the first time you reminded me of her which makes me very happy. I may end up stalking you, but only online - I promise!

Hi there! While I’m not able to respond to every comment, I try hard to answer any questions that haven’t been addressed in the post, recipe or in other comments.

I can tell you now 1) I have no idea if you can substitute Minute Rice or brown rice in my recipes because I’ve never used them and 2) If I know how to convert a recipe to a Crock Pot version, I will make a note about it (otherwise, I don’t know).

And though I may not respond to them all, I do read each and every comment and I LOVE to hear from you guys! Thanks, y’all! - Mandy
